The second story mentions how everything he had built ended, and he went on to achieve more in life. The third story talks about living each day as if it were the last, taking risks, and following your heart. He recounted how he achieved everything with the same principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s think of a second speech with the following words &#8211;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should follow your heart. You should invest more time in work that attracts you naturally. Everything makes sense later in life, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which one of the two would resonate more?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lessons are the same in both. But the first speech starts with an anecdote. The presenter shares the wisdom, but he weaves it into his life journey, making the content more interesting and memorable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling is a profound tool to magnify your words and make them worth remembering. For instance, suspenseful stories can increase dopamine, causing an increase in focus and memory. Similarly, humorous stories increase endorphins, making people feel more relaxed and creative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-crafted story will let people visualize and feel it, leading to them caring about the cause and the outcome. Researchers found that when the presenter tells a story, the part of his brain that lights up during the process is akin to people\u2019s brains hearing the story. The speaker\u2019s and listener\u2019s brains light up in the same region. People are more inclined to act on the message rather than be passive listeners, as stories and anecdotes can engage and persuade people on different levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling should be such that it makes people think. And no matter the age, we still remember the content and the moral. It was a simple story but taught an important lesson &#8211; the power of consistency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weave your message in a catchy story, and there are good chances of people taking your idea home. Great stories build anticipation and change beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>6. You are sitting through a presentation about logos and taglines. The list is of, let\u2019s say, 50 companies. How many will you be able to remember and recall after the presentation, or let\u2019s say after a few days?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe the ones you had known previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if that information was shared with quick and catchy stories behind them?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, the interlocking rings of Audi was a merger of four European automakers, namely Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. Or Nike\u2019s famous slogan &#8211; Just do it &#8211; got its inspiration from a death row convict whose last words were &#8211; Let\u2019s do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stories can help simplify dense and complex information (like financial data). It makes the content interesting, relatable, and worth remembering. (For example, the information we shared above, you are not going to forget for a long time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Principles and Formula of Storytelling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>a). Connect it to a Message<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your story should be related to your message. You can\u2019t be random or contradictory with your stories, or the speech will lose its purpose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if the presentation is about environmental protection, the stories that you include can\u2019t highlight the importance of development at the cost of the environment, or it can\u2019t talk about racism or gender neutrality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>b). Show Problems, Then Give Solutions\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All good stories follow this format of issues and solutions. No matter the kind of story you tell, it encounters a problem in the beginning, which is solved later by the hero despite all the odds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to make your audience the hero, wherever possible, and offer changes to alter their perspectives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note &#8211; <\/strong>Offer proper setting and details. The audience should have every reference to understand each aspect of your story and how it&#8217;s related to your key point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>c). Stories Should be Relatable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t tell a story that gives message A when the context of your presentation is T. You will lose the meaning of your story, no matter how great it is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People can disengage and perceive you as incompetent. So, your stories should always support your central point in one way or another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>d). It Should Build Trust<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most critical components of storytelling is developing trust between the audience and the presenter. People should be able to resonate with your words. They should understand what you are saying and connect to your words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research your audience. Find what makes them tick. What has been their journey so far? What obstacles did they have to face?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People trust you when they feel heard without any judgments. Craft your story around your mutual journeys. It should include both you and your audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>e). Understand that Everyone is Different<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience you cater to is not going to be the same. People will have different cultural or personal backgrounds. Also, it shouldn\u2019t be overly complicated that people have difficulty comprehending. What Is, What Could Be, Call to Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What is &#8211; Recall the status quo for people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What could be &#8211; Reveal the better path<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call to Action &#8211; Share with them the new bliss, i.e., how better things will be for them by adopting this new solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>(ii). Situation, Complication, Question, Answer (SCQA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Situation &#8211; The current situation and the story behind it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complication &#8211; What is causing that problem or situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Question &#8211; How can we change the current situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer &#8211; Share the solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>(iii). Rags to Riches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A lot of hardships in life for the main character.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He hits rock bottom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catapults to great success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>(iv). In Medias Res\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You jump right into the middle of things, as the name suggests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give a teaser of the current scenario without giving too many details away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then, go back to the start, relaying everything that led to that event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain the initial action scene thoroughly when you reach it again chronologically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Tailor the Storytelling According to the Audience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your audience is either vertical or horizontal. The former are people who have more or less knowledge than you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter are people who have the same knowledge as you. The distinction will help you decide on the terminology and story arc you wish to incorporate into your presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>a). Small Size Audience<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you are in a meeting with your peers. This kind of small gathering is good for horizontal communication. The storytelling technique you can use is &#8211;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Create an interesting avatar for each member. Place the avatars on the tasks and move them as you have check-ins. You can create a story around it to make it more fun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>b).<\/strong> <strong>Mid Size Audience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of a setting of around 50+ people (like employee orientation), you can\u2019t rely entirely on horizontal communication. The storytelling technique you can use is &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Share real success stories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Separate the audience and ask different what-if questions. Have group discussions and create user stories from the replies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include dialogue simulations. Have random participants do guided conversations regarding things they encounter around the presentation topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>c). Large Size Audience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you address a large audience, like in the case of a TED Talk or keynote speech, communication will be a combination of horizontal and vertical. The storytelling technique you can rely on is &#8211;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Share anecdotes and stories that happened to you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another interesting way is to segregate your presentation into parts. Tell stories people can relate to for each part, such as completing goals, overcoming trauma, surviving obstacles, etc.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>In a Nutshell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling doesn\u2019t come naturally to you?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing to worry about. Like other skills, you can master storytelling with consistent practice.
